How to Dress Part 1

I’m continuing from yesterday’s post because I found some notes in my journal on this very topic. There’s no order to these verses and thoughts, no priority and sharing them is probably going to spread over a few days. 🙂

(I have a lazy habit of reading, making notes and forgetting. But – I should be glad I read. I should be gladder I make notes. I should be gladder still when I put into practice. I want to be over flowing with gladness when I ‘do’ that practice til it becomes a habit.)

12 The darkness of night is dissolving as dawn’s light draws near, so walk out on your old dark life and put on the armor of light.

Romans 13:12

There’ll be another verse about armour at some point but this is a good place to start. The armour of light,

11-14 But make sure that you don’t get so absorbed and exhausted in taking care of all your day-by-day obligations that you lose track of the time and doze off,

oblivious to God.

The night is about over, dawn is about to break.

Be up and awake to what God is doing!

God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed.

We can’t afford to waste a minute,

must not squander these precious daylight hours in frivolity and indulgence,

in sleeping around and dissipation,

in bickering and grabbing everything in sight.

Get out of bed and get dressed!

Don’t loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute.

Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!

Romans 12:11-14 The Message

There are times for the glorious beauty of the language of the Bible, that makes us ponder and dig. Then there are times for short sharp slaps across the cheeks waking us up and reminding us as Peterson so often does in The Message.

Go back and read each line and let it sink in. Let it be that cold water splashed on your face to bring you out of slumber. Like me, I bet several (or more) of us skipped through that passage.

I broke it up deliberately into phrases and God inspired the translation through His Spirit – maybe for such a time as this. Definitely for such a time in my case.

Dress yourself in Christ. I’ve just started a book about Knowing God by J I Packer. Eternal life, Jesus said, is to know God and Jesus whom He sent – John 17:3. To dress in Him I have to know Him. I can’t put on pants unless I know how they work – legs in the legs, fasten round the waist. I can’t dress in Him unless I know how He fits, how He ‘works’.

Some of the other verses express specifics about what this dress is but a good place to start in ‘dressing myself’ is to learn about Him, to spend time with Him.

Join me and let’s start a fashion show that changes our world.
