I like you the way you are
When we’re drivin’ in your car
And you’re talking to me one on one
But you’ve become…
Somebody else ’round everyone else
You’re watching your back like you can’t relax
You’re tryin’ to be cool
You look like a fool to me
It’s all about relationship. Life with other people and life with God is about having relationship and being real. It struck me this morning three times that I complicate that simple truth mainly because I allow my experience with people to colour my relationship with God instead of the other way round. This was the first ‘striking’:
24 Let the good news, the story you have heard from the beginning of your journey, live in and take hold of you. If that happens and you focus on the good news, then you will always remain in a relationship with the Son and the Father. 25 This is what He promised us: eternal life.
26 I also am writing to warn you about some who are attempting to deceive you. 27 You have an anointing. You received it from Him, and His anointing remains on you. You do not need any other teacher. But as His anointing instructs you in all the essentials (all the truth uncontaminated by darkness and lies), it teaches you this: “Remain connected to Him.”
What’s the Good News? John sums it up beautifully in his account of the life of Jesus.
16 For God expressed His love for the world in this way: He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not face everlasting destruction, but will have everlasting life. 17 Here’s the point. God didn’t send His Son into the world to judge it; instead, He is here to rescue a world headed toward certain destruction.
That is the Good News. God loved us, He sent His Son Jesus to rescue us. If we believe in Him we are saved. Period, end of discussion no more is needed. Ah, but – no, God did it, there’s nothing we can add or do. But, but – no. ‘It is finished‘ Jesus words not mine. He loves me and has made a home for me in Him just as He makes His home in me. That sounds complicated, but really it isn’t. Look back at Avril’s words – I like you the way you are when we’re driving in your car talking one on one. God loves us exactly the way we are right now. He loves us when we are talking with Him one on one. When we are who we are and look at Him as who He is. When we look at Him, remain with Him
IT CHANGES US
He changes us, we don’t change ourselves it is all Him.
The second time God said this was in a letter by Brother Lawrence. To summarise he said about a lady who had written to him – she tries to hurry grace. Nobody becomes perfect all at once. It is by spending time with God that we are changed because we realise that nothing has worth outside Him.
Then just ‘cos He is God and He can I read today’s reading in My Utmost for His Highest. (for the record this is the first time I have opened it, I bought it for next year) Let me share the first sentence.
It is a trap to presume that God wants to make us perfect specimens of what He can do— God’s purpose is to make us one with Himself.
Relationship is the start and middle and end. How do I get relationship, or develop relationship, continue to deepen it? – by remaining in Him, with Him.
See it’s simple – not complicated at all.
