There was a song – What’s it all about Alfie? Went with the film, Michael Caine in my memory though they remade it. A man out for all he can get – sex, women, just having a good time, unconcerned with who he hurts along the way so long as he is happy. He is just living for the moment without thought of tomorrow. The song advises him to find true love because without it he is nothing.
Quite right too, I am all for true love. Without love life is meaningless, pointless. We need family and friends. But more than that we need God.
Only His love is pure and perfect. Only His love will never let us down, never fail us, never abandon us. Only His love cares more for us than we care for ourselves.
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
This passage is read a lot at weddings, even by non-believers because it describes the height and aspiration of love, the aim of every couple as they are joined together.
It describes God because God is Love.
Look at the Cross and see that love laid bare for you and for me.
Look at the Cross and see peace being won.
Look at the Cross and see His death bringing forgiveness and acceptance.
Look at the Cross – empty as He was laid in the tomb and see the price paid.
That is what it is all about.
